Ditch the Resolutions. Do this simple 3 Step Practice instead to stick with your Goals
Happy New Year and New Decade! Happy Dr. Martin Luther King Day!
Have you made a bunch of resolutions? Or perhaps you committed to NOT making any resolutions this year??
I did not make any resolutions this year. But I did take time to “take stock,” so to speak. I spent time examining and writing about myself with the goal of celebrating my own accomplishments and awesomeness, acknowledging my failures in order to see where and how I can expand further into integrity, compassion and confidence, and clarifying my goals.
One of the ways I do this is with an exercise I learned from my teacher Layla Martin. It’s called “Celebrations, Clearings and Desires.” Here is a glimpse at one of my recent lists:
I Celebrate that I wrote, edited and published my first book!
I Celebrate that my relationships with my parents, my ex-husband, my kids and my boyfriend are stronger, healthier and more joyful than last year
I Celebrate how many people I have helped have more joy, freedom and pleasure in their lives
I Celebrate all of the amazing, brilliant wonderful friends who love me
I Clear fear and worry that Isadora’s skin will never heal completely
I Clear frustration at myself for failing to prioritize writing time
I Clear this snotty nose situation that I’ve had for weeks
I Clear sadness, overwhelm and fear about the state of our world and the environment
I Desire everyone I care about to be Super Healthy!
I Desire to feel amazing about my appearance for upcoming speaking events
I Desire Beautiful new lingerie
I Desire Megan Rapinoe to read my book and Love It and Share about it on Instagram!!
As you can see - you can really write down anything and everything that bubbles up to the surface of your brain. You can set a timer for yourself; you can write every day, or once a week or on every full moon. This is a great exercise to do with a friend or partner. You simply take turns speaking your celebrations, clearings and desires out loud. Your partner holds the space for you without judgement, comment or response. It is not a conversation between you two: it is taking turns with supportive space holding.
After the speaking person is complete, the listening person can say, Thank you for sharing. Or I support you in everything you shared.
Another exercise that I encourage you to play with - specifically if you are looking to make major shifts in your life for this new year or new decade is called “Define Yourself.” This writing exercise helps you focus on who you want to be and how you want to live your life by clearing away all the conditioning and judgements that have seeped into your psyche from society, your parents, your religion, teachers, the media, etc.
If you are a man reading this, here are your writing prompts:
What does it mean to be a good person?
What defines a “good man”?
Bonus Question: What is a good father?
I encourage you to really dig into these questions. Spend time every day as a “conditioning detective” - looking for messages you have received all your life and judgements you carry around every day about these questions. Where are you judging yourself? When are you criticizing others?
If you are a woman reading this, your writing prompts are:
What does it mean to be a good person?
What defines a “good woman”?
Bonus Question: What is a good mother?
Again - really dig into this question. Where are you unconsciously judging yourself as failing as a human, woman and/or mother? Whose judgement are you measuring yourself against? Do you even believe that it is true?
I look forward to hearing what comes up for you! And I would LOVE to hear any celebrations, clearings and desires you want to share with me!
BIG LOVE,
Margot
