Choose Love Challenge - Perform a Non-Random Act of Kindness (and brag about it to me)

Ok, deep breath. This whole lock-down thing is getting pretty old right about now. I’m over it. I want to just fucking walk into a coffee shop, smile at a barista and scarf down a chocolate chip cookie, without worrying about anything more than the cookie’s calorie count.

Is that too much to freakin’ ask?

Screams the frustrated and angry teenage part of me.

Well yes, Margot. It is too much to ask right now.

Responds the more mature, rational adult part of my psyche.

That SUCKS!

The teenager yells back.

And then the tears start flowing.

I just wanted a cookie, she cries inconsolably.

And so it goes.

I am sharing this glimpse into my own inner dialogue to show you that if you have a similar dialogue running in your head, do not fret. You are not alone and you are not crazy.

It’s normal to have a mix of emotions, reactions, thoughts and feelings. It is also normal for your emotional reactions to particular situations to actually surprise you. Your nervous system is trying to catch up with constantly changing, unprecedented and frightening circumstances.

My daughter Isadora reminded me of this truth a few days ago when she burst into tears on our drive home from celebrating my mother’s birthday. I had organized a  “Drive by Car Parade” with a few close friends. In addition to her birthday we were also celebrating the news from her doctors that she is now officially Cancer FREE!! My mom was deeply touched and I was feeling incredibly joyful, lighthearted and grateful.

Isadora however, was overwhelmed with sadness.

I just wanted to hug her! She cried.

It felt so awful to see her, my body hurt from wanting to hug her so much. And I miss my friends too! I miss Amelia. I miss school. I miss my teacher. I even miss the annoying kids!

All the sadness, grief and loneliness came rushing out in a messy torrent.

I reacted with annoyance at first: I had a feeling of “why is she raining on my happiness parade” ?!

But then I took a breath and realized that it made perfect sense that Isadora would feel so much sadness in that moment.

So in honor of Isadora - I am extending that permission and understanding to you.

You may also share this permission slip with your loved ones.

I encourage you this week to perform at least one act of non random kindness by allowing yourself or someone you love to feel whatever feeling they are feeling in a moment - no matter how surprising or “out of place” it may feel to you.

Choosing kindness and compassion for yourself and your loved ones will make you feel better. I guarantee it.
